It’s Alive!

Today i had an ECG and a blood sample taken. Totally painless! I needed the blood sample to identify my blood group “just in case” and the ECG to check that i didn’t have a hidden problem. Fortunately everything is fine, my resting heart rate is 56 bpm which is very good.

I have also added a link to my justgiving webpage so that i can start fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Society.

How are the mighty fallen!

Well I got the medal and the T shirt for finishing the Southdowns Marathon, but I also got bruised ribs and arm from falling full length 15 miles into the race!

The route was even more hilly than I thought and so I adopted the run-walk-run plan that I have for the MDS and it worked. I woke up on the Sunday Morning with out any stiffness in my legs and was able to walk around quite freely, a first for me!

All in all an interesting event, beautiful scenery, and a good practise for running off-road.

SouthDowns Marathon

On 12th June, i shall be running the Southdowns Marathon as a training session for the Marathon des Sables. I have been in contact with another runner who has run the course over two weekends, and given me lots of good advice regarding the course and the location of the hills!

Bring it on!!

Kilomathon

Well i ran the Kilomathon from Nottingham to Derby in 2 hours 25 minutes which is 5min 32 seconds per kilometre. i finished in 1926 place of a field of 6000.

I was happy with the result but raised two large blisters on my feet, a problem I don’t usually suffer from. Perhaps I should have worn the new trainers in more before the race!

So now I take a week’s rest before starting on my training towards the South Down’s Marathon in June.

My Training

I am currently training at least three times per week, A long run on a Sunday (currently up to 1 hour 30 mins at under 6min per kM) plus a faster run with hills on a Tuesday and my hour long personal trainer session every Thursday. Last night i ran for 65 mins covering 10.6 kM including climbing 200 metres.

My first check point is the Nottingham-Derby Kilomathon on 14th March. This is a 26kM race along the river bank from nottingham University through to Pride Park in Derby. i would like to complete it in under 2hours 30mins, would be happier if i could do it in 2:15 and over the moon if under 2:00.

Following that I have entered the South Downs Marathon in June. An off road event (good practise for the MDS) which i would like to complete in 4:00 but have been warned it is very hilly so will be happy if it takes 4:15www.saharamarathon.co.uk.gif

Marathon Des Sables

In April 2011 I shall be undertaking the Marathon Des Sables. This is one of the most extreme sporting events known to Man; 250km across the Sahara in 6 days carrying your own food, in temperatures of 40C. Why am I undertaking such an endeavour? Because it gives me a target that requires me to get to a level of fitness, but mainly to prove to myself that I can! Its only the equivalent of a marathon each day for 6 days!

I will be raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of my friend, Derek Straw, who recently died after many  years suffering from this terrible condition.

I will be looking for sponsorship nearer the time, at present all I

want is your support!
